Would You Be A Witness ?

Interior - Day - Breakfast at the Pinner's house

[Rita]6 months since the last episode Gina has started divorce proceedings against Vince and Les has invited her round to talk - much to the disgust of Rita. Les might lose 50% of his business

LES
"I don't see why I should lose anything. I didn't go to Paris and have an affair with that Penny Warrender bird."

Rita is not letting any of the blame fall on Vince

RITA
"Someone better tell that Gina that the bedroom aint just for hanging your wigs in"

[Gina]Gina enters and is given a mouthful by Rita - when she should be being diplomatic. She turns on the greasy charm

GRAHAM
"Oh please don't you turn against me the way Vincent has"

Rita and Les are taken in and are assured it has all been a misunderstanding. She asks about the vineyard and is told all about it even being given a detailed financial breakdown.

Vince enters

GRAHAM
"I just called round to say hello"
VINCE
"And you had to sit down for it"

Gina bursts into mock tears.

Interior - Day - Airport

Penny arrives at the airport from Paris

Interior - Day - Breakfast at the Pinner's house

Rita is telling Vince off for making Gina cry

VINCE
"They can hear it next door and we're detached"

Vince points out she is just grabbing everything she can and Les clutches back the vineyard report. Rita and Les leave the room for them to be alone.

[Les]Gina is pleased with what she found out about the vineyard and aims to squeeze Vince's importing company. She also intends to 'name' Penny in the divorce proceedings. Vince calms she was innocents and that he hasn't even seen her for 6 months.

Vince leaves and the phone rings. Eventually Gina answers it

PENNY
"Bonjour Vincent I have returned"

Gina makes a lot of the situation that she is at their house and calls Vince to the phone saying "Its one of your friends" Vince returns to hold a sheepish conversation. They arrange to meet for lunch in an Italian wine bar in Abbots road.

Penny (at the airport) wants to know if anything has changed and Vince reassures her that it has not. She declares her love and it seems that it is unrequited so she asks

PENNY
"You do know who this is don't you"
VINCE
"of course"
PENNY
"Just thought I'd ask"

Interior - Day - La Barletta - Italian restaurant

[Vincent]Vince is in a spiel about marketing his new wine as still trod by peasants

PENNY
"Put a corn plaster in every bottle"

Vince is short of a decent wine man. Penny is not really interested she admits to having been home

PENNY
"Mummy was depressed"
VINCE
"Have you told her about us"
PENNY
"Of course I haven't it'd kill her"
VINCE
"You should tell her"

[Penny]Penny plants the idea in Vince's head that her father used to be in the trade - and Vince is struck by a sudden idea. Penny suggests retiring to a sleazy hotel room to act like 'the other woman'. Vince thinks it Christmas.

Exterior - Day - La Barletta - Italian restaurant

[Man And Woman]Penny leaves the restaurant only to run straight into her mother who has just taken father to "The Office" she is anxious to leave as Vince is behind her. She almost manages but her mother drags her back for one last question. Vince walks straight between them. Daphne collapses against the side of the restaurant in astonishment for the first time realising her daughter is the 'other woman'. Vince is sent to get some water. Some passers by think she drunk. Vince arrives with the water and Penny tries to take it off him to give her mother a drink. Vince throws it on Daphne's face to revive her. Daphne breaks down into tears.

Interior - Night - Serviceman's Club

[Arthur]Norman is talking to Arthur the barman who is recounting how his wife had a similar turn to Daphne "God rest her soul" its the happy hour. Vince appears having blagged his way into the club and tries to explaining about the incident. Norman has obviously had an earful of it from Daphne but is intrigued

NORMAN
"Did you really throw water in her face ?"
VINCE
"Please Norman I don't want any thanks - I'd do it again if I had to"

[Norman]Vince swears he is not telling lies and then lies that he is not seeing Penny. Arthur brings him over his drink

ARthUR
"Group Captain"
VINCE
"Yes"
ARthUR
"You left your drink in the other bar. Chocks away sir"
VINCE
"Up periscope"

Norman is shocked but this dies down when Vince tells him his wine firm is recruiting. Vince can not get him to push forward himself

VINCE
"Norman I am looking for someone who was head of sales and distribution - have lots of contacts in the retail trade and knows all the pitfalls."
NORMAN
"Are you serious Vincent"
VINCE
"I've never been more serious in my life"
NORMAN
"Well yes I do - I've got the perfect man for you"
VINCE
"Really - Who"
NORMAN
"His name is David Palmer - he used to work under me .."

Vince bashes his head in his hands

VINCE
"Cor this is hard work"

He points out that he wants someone of Norman's age in fact Norman

VINCE
"Head of sales - consultant and a seat right next to name on the board to advise me when I'm about to make a cock up. Now what do you say"
NORMAN
"Its a wonderful opportunity - Just trying to think of somebody for you"
VINCE
"Listen Norman they close in three hours - you've toyed with me long enough - if you don't want the job just say so"
NORMAN
"Me - you want me for the job ?"
VINCE
"You're a cool customer Norman - lured me right into your trap"

Norman accepts the job with the old sparkle

VINCE
"There's less to you than meets the eye"
NORMAN
"Yes"

Interior - Night - Warrender's lounge

[Daphne]Daphne fully recovered is smoking and reading. As penny enters she fakes illness. Penny gives her medication and explains how she happened to meet Vince. Daphne asks about his marriage and Penny evilly lets out he is getting a divorce. Daphne nearly chokes on her water. She then gets up as full of life rambling on about how Vince must have been unfaithful. Penny stays silence. Daphne dogs her own grave

DAPHNE
"There's some little trollop somewhere - you steer well clear of him and the same goes for that entire family the less contact we have with them the better"

Norman enters joyous Daphne goes back to faking it. He hands around drinks

NORMAN
"I have been offered a job"
DAPHNE
"That's all I need your father coming home drunk"

Penny flicks through the prospectus and sees who owns it - WWC - Walthamstow Wine Company - she sneaks out. Daphne reads out the directors

DAPHNE
"V Pinner - L Pinner - R Pinner and C Pinner - Its the Pinners"
NORMAN
"No dear"
DAPHNE
"What do you mean No dear ? V Pinner - L Pinner - R Pinner and C Pinner - you don't have to be head of Interpol to work out its the Pinners"

Norman is impressed by the company

VINCE
"Whatever you think of Vincent he's a damn good business man"
DAPHNE
"But its the Pinners"

Daphne is horrified about having to socialize with them

DAPHNE
"We'll have to drink Australian sherry - think about it Norman we'll have to Jive"

Norman in a rare piece of domination lays down that what he is going to do and suggests Daphne gets on board.

NORMAN
"If we have to jive then jive we will"

Daphne breaks down

Interior - Night - Restaurant

Penny and Vince meet and Penny is trying to work out why he offered Norman a job

PENNY
"I think you're trying to buy us - you want to own my family"
VINCE
"No really Pen I don't want to own you family"

There follows a loud argument about Vince not wanting to own the family and Penny refusing to be owned. They suddenly stop in loud agreement. Penny sheepishly asks

PENNY
"This wont affect my father's job"

Vincent explains why he has hired Norman

VINCE
"Hes the most honest man I know - he wont cheat me - I need him more than he needs me"

Penny then asks about why Gina answered the phone this morning. Vince tries to convince her she had not spent the night. Penny tries to convince Vince she has had loads of me in the past six months - but Vince can not be convinced so she kicks him. Vince admits to being in celibacy

VINCE
"Monks have been knocking at my door asking me how I do it - You don't honesty think I'd cheat on you and sleep with my wife do you ?"

Penny can not take the emotions that have been boiling up recently she storms out still not believing how easily Vince got married she half promises to phone him.

[Georgio]Vince is devastated and even recites some poetry before giving into the final temptation and buying some cigarettes

Credits roll.

[Witness]Penny drives off and Vince tries to smoke but has no matches so he ditches the cigarettes. He gets in his car only to find the car lighter. He almost gives up when the phone rings. It is Penny and they make up only to have Vince plough straight into Penny's car a man keeps appearing offering himself as a crash witness. In the making up Vince proposes and Penny accepts asking the man

VINCE
"Would you be a witness"
