![]() | MICKEY MOUSE The world's most famous mouse is the best known of all the animated characters created by Walt Disney. There cannot be many people who haven't heard of Mickey. Mickey - now in his 60's has changed and developed over the years. He has matured from the mucous rebel to good-natured-little-guy- trying-to-make-good. However - Disney has always been careful to ensure that the changes over the years have been natural - making them hardly noticeable. |
![]() | WICKED QUEEN/WITCH The forces of good and evil are strikingly depicted in the difference between Snow White and her deadly enemy - the Wicked Queen - who is as vain and cruel as Snow White is kind and loving. One of Disney's most powerful characters - this villainess has two personalities - both of them are dreadful! As the Wicked Queen - her icy beauty cannot hide her obsessive jealousy. As the Witch - her outside is as ugly as her inside! From warty nose to shrieking cackle - she's the epitome of evil - and an animated version of one's worst nightmare. |
![]() | SNOW WHITE The young princess who finds refuge from her wicked stepmother with seven pint-sized friends - is as fresh and lovely as the day she first appeared on screen in 1937. Snow White seems very young - even for a Disney princess. In fact - it's her innocence and trust that enables the wicked stepmother to trick her. But her pure - lovable nature also stands her in good stead - winning her the friendship and protection of the forest animals - the dwarfs and - of course - the handsome prince. |
![]() | JIMINY CRICKET This tiny world-traveller and homespun philosopher first appeared as Pinocchio's conscience - but later became a sophisticated - "spokes-cricket" - host - narrator and instructor in many Disney television shows and educational films. An easy-going little fellow - Jimmy never stays down-hearted for long. He's determined to stick to Pinocchio and bales him out of several very nasty situations - delivering his wisdom in a cheerful - witty style - brightened with frequent song. |
![]() | PINOCCHIO A wooden puppet carved by Geppetto - Pinocchio is brought to life by the Blue Fairy in answer to Geppetto's wish. But before Pinocchio can become a real boy - he must prove himself worthy. Unfortunately - his innocence easily leads him astray despite the frantic efforts of Jiminy Cricket - his assigned conscience. Attempts to get out of trouble by fibbing ouly make Pinocchio's nose grow - and it's not until he learns to think of others before himself - and rescues Geppetto in a daring gesture of selflessness that his wish to be a real boy comes true. |
![]() | DUMBO A brand-new infant at the beginning of the film - Dumbo grows up a little - but still remains a very young child - with a child's vulnerability - throughout the story. Due to his youth - he never talks - but those baby-blue eyes speak volumes for him. As the forlorn little elephant who doesn't understand why he has been separated from his mother - Dumbo evokes sympathy - making his final triumph especially gratifying. |
![]() | MINNIE MOUSE Minnie is the much-loved girlfriend of Mickey Mouse. She has grown up alongside Mickey and has developed hand-in-hand with him. Minnie herself has changed from a romantic - independent - young lady to Mickey's favourite helpmate and girlfriend. As with Mickey - Disney has been careful to ensure that all the changes in Minnie have been natural - and hence hardly noticeable. |
![]() | BAMBI Graceful in a gawky - long-legged way - Bambi epitomizes all the innocent - wide-eyed delight of childhood as he romps through his forest world with his young friends - Thumper and Flower. Growing up - Bambi must confront loss and danger in his world. But as he does - he also discovers the beauty of love and the powerful reality of the strong young forest leader he is destined to become. |
![]() | CINDERELLA Not quite as naive as some fairy-tale heroines - Cinderella is intelligent - gentle - good-tempered and has a sense of humour that she wisely keeps hidden from her mean stepmother. But she's not too browbeaten to crack a joke to her mmce friends behind her homely stepsisters' backs. When it comes to attending the ball - she stands up for her right to attend. A weaker character would give in and give up - but Cinderella hangs on to her dreams with an optimism that not even her nasty relatives can dispel. |
![]() | THE MAD HATTER The leader of a madcap threesome which includes the March Hare and the sleepy Doormouse - the mad Hatter sets a pace in partying that has never been matched! When he throws a party - it's all over the place! With his personal lunatic sense of humour the lisping logician confounds Alice with his nonsense riddles and outrageous statements - all the while buttering pocket watches - teasing the poor Doormouse (who just wants to be allowed to sleep peacefully in the teapot) and upsetting the party with his raucous behaviour. The Mad Hatter character was modelled largely around his voice (Ed Wynn) and the match is superb. |
![]() | alICE One of Disney's most assertive heroines - Alice speaks her mind and gets things done! From the moment she chases the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole into Wonderland - to her confrontation with the Queen of Hearts - Alice proves to be a fair match for all the curious characters and adventures she meets - standing her ground quite capably - even when confused or afraid. |
![]() | JOHN AND MICHAEL DARLING Full of Wendy's fanciful tales - John and Michael - her young brothers are ecstatic at the chance to break free from the rigours of their middle-class - Victorian boyhood and enjoy an exciting adventure. John - the older - seems a bit of an intellectual. Emulating his stuffy father - John tries to speak like him - wears atop hat - thin-rimmed spectacles and carries an umbrella. Despite his attempts to appear grown-up - his boyish boisterousness breaks through in an endearing way. Michael plays a smaller role. Always a few steps behind the others - he manages to get along fine in his pink pyjamas with his trusty teddy bear by his side. |
![]() | PETER PAN One hundred percent boy - Peter refuses to grow up and leave his life of freedom and adventure in Never Never Land. And who could blame him? For here is all the adventure anyone could ask - from pirate duels to attacks (however playful) by Indians! And Peter relishes it all! Agile - quick - confident and daring - Peter is the leader of the Lost Boys - who follow him with unswerving devotion. He's also the secret idol of several ladies - including Tinker Bell - Princess Tiger Lily - the mermaids of Mermaid Lagoon and - of course - Wendy. |
![]() | GOOFY Goofy is unique among Disney's characters in the gang surrounding Mickey Mouse - in that he evolved into a major star. As well - he is the only one of Mickey's gang not to have an alliterative full name for example - Pluto the Pup - Peg Leg Pete and Horace Horsecollar. During the early 1930's Goofy appeared in various Mickey Mouse shorts. At the same time he was rising to a position of importance in the Mickey Mouse comic strips in the daily newspapers. |
![]() | PLUTO Pluto is one hundred percent dog in all his behaviour and action. He communicates to Mickey and the rest of the gang through growls - barks - tail-thumps and toothy grins. A great deal of Pluto's humour lies in his attempts to please Mickey and in his typically canine attitude towards pretty lady mutts - juicy steaks - stray cats - pesky chipmunks like Chip 'n' Dale and leads. |
![]() | LADY Although she looks romantically soft and cuddly - Lady is not just another pretty face. She's loyal - honest and as upright in her behaviour as anyone would expect a Victorian lady to be. With inherent courage - Lady doesn't hesitate to stand up for herself or others - whether she's defending the house from Aunt Sarah's vandalous cats - trying to get at the rat that threatens the baby - or telling Tramp what she thinks of him. As spirited as she is warmhearted - she is always a lady which is probably why Tramp finds her so fascinating. |
![]() | trAMP Quick witted and fast on his paws - Tramp is a streetwise stray with a cynical - humorous view of life in general and humans in particular. He is also extremely wily. No problem is too big for Tramp. This point is proved when he works out a way to get Lady's muzzle off. He convinces the beaver at the zoo that the muzzle is a new improved patented handy dandy never- fail little-giant log puller. By the end of the movie - Tramp has decided to give up his womanizing and settle down with Lady and their litter of pups! |
![]() | PRINCESS AURORA Princess Aurora is the Sleeping Beauty. She is the central character of the movie amund which the story is based. First of all she is cursed - then she meets and falls in love with Prince Phillip and finally she pricks her finger and falls into a death-like sleep. Sleeping Beauty is not quite sixteen years old and very pretty. She has a special affinity with the animals of the forest - who replace all the human friends of her own age that in normal circumstances she would have had. Princess Aurora is the classic romantic heroine. |
![]() | CRUELLA DE VIL One of the most entertaining of all Disney villains - Cruella is a real go-getter who likes getting her way (and usually does). Obsessed with fur coats - she has her heart (what there is of it) set on owning one made of genuine dalmatian. Always looking out for herself - Cruella becomes a demon when she's crossed. Surrounded by swirls of evil-coloured cigarette smoke and graced with a temper and tongue as sharp as her cheekbones - this sophisticated 'insultress' is a contemporary monster in furs. However - she is so exaggerated that even her most outrageous temper tantrums have a bit of high comedy about them. |
![]() | MOWGLI Like a young animal - Mowgli is completely at home in his jungle environment. Confident that he can survive on his own - he romps through the forest with energy and carefree abandon. There's just one problem - Mowgli gullibly believes that everyone in the wild is his friend and it's just not so. His innocence about certain ill-wishing jungle residents and his stubborness get him and his friends - Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther into no end of trouble. But in the end - Mowgli's human nature gets the best of him - and attracted by a female "mancub" he leaves the jungle and his animal companions behind for the world of men where he rightfully belongs. |
![]() | KING LOUIE This jazz singing ruler of the apes has one ambition in life - to become a human being by gaining control of the "red flower" - fire. To do this - he sends his army of monkeys to kidnap Mowgli and wrest the secret from him. Although the portly orangutan has a mean streak that shows up when he's crossed - he's more mischievous and scatterbrained than malicious. Fortunately for the rest of the jungle - Mowgli knows nothing about fire - because if Louie ever got hold of the information - it's certain he'd show off with it and send the jungle up in flames! |
![]() | WINNIE THE POOH Closely modelled on A.A. Milne's original bear of very little brain and very large appetite - Disney's Winnie the Pooh is a childlike and endearing character. Although he's very humble about his talents - Pooh actually has his own unique style of instinctive wisdom - especially when it comes to kind behaviour towards his friends. He also has a rather remarkable pngt for poetry and his expressions have a sort of nonsensical good sense about them that never fails to delight. Gentle - unassuming and friendly - Pooh's greatest love (next to making up new songs or visiting Piglet and Christopher Robin) will always be "hunny" and he goes to great lengths - and heights - of imagination to get his paws on it every chance he gets. |
![]() | TIGGER More aggressive than his literary counterpart - Disney's Tigger has taken the bounce from Milne's character and amplified it! Tigger's main flaw is also his best characteristic! He's wonderfully enthusiastic about everything - but most especially about himself. . 'The most wonderful thing about Tiggers is I'm the only one'' - he claims. Boisterous and boastful - Tigger is very outgoing - but so forceful that he rather intimidates the other characters. To his credit - he docsn't realize that he is frequently bouncing on their feelings. Of course - Tigger finds it hard to ever admit he has made a mistake - and his explanations of how things happened are often outrageous stories! Still you can't help but love his zest for life and readiness to try anything! |
![]() | DONalD DUCK Donald's intentions are usually good. He just can't control his temper when things don't go right. Quick to anger - he's also very enthusiastic about his many projects and tackles them with incredible determination. In fact - Donald just doesn't know when to give up; a trait that frequently gets him in trouble with Daisy - his nephews - Witch Hazel - or just about anyone else who crosses his path. |
![]() | OLIVER Oliver has as much courage and determination as someone twice his size - plus he just doesn't know the meaning of the words "give up". When Dodger refuses to share the hot dogs that Oliver has helped him nab - Oliver boldly follows Dodger all the way home. And later - when his new owner - Jenny - is kidnapped by the conniving mobster - Sykes - Oliver is ready to aid in her rescue. |
